Sophie Rae led a couple of workshops in the Print Shop, whilst it was open. Now if you missed the chance to get involved she is holding another one on Tuesday 11th. 

This is a workshop based on the theme of ancient woodland, where participants learn a unique printing technique, which is easy to do at home, without needing specific printing facilities or expensive materials. The process starts with a rough sketch/design. This design is then cut into stencils using a craft knife. Beautiful colours of ink are then mixed and applied with a durathene roller through the gaps in the stencils, also referred to as pochoir. 

You will experiment with layering the inks to achieve different textures and effects to create a woodland-inspired print which you can take home. 

You also have the choice to work your designs onto a set of five greetings cards. 

Its a three hour workshop, with all materials provided for £25. 

Its advisable to wear clothing you don't mind getting ink on, or bring an apron.

Looking back at our etching workshop

Print maker's Gilly Thompson and Liz Bath held an introduction into etching course last month, from which participants created some beautiful prints. Here are some process photographs from the evening.

As well as take home a unique set of prints participants learnt how to use an etching needle to create a drypoint image, how to register artwork and experimented with an inked plate to achieve different tonal effects.

Workshop spotlight: Botanical Monoprinting

Katharina Nyilas is running a very exciting new workshop next week, giving you the chance to experiment with her Botanical Monoprinting technique. Katharina's work is hugely inspired by environmental concerns, and using recycled or unusual reclaimed materials to produce her artwork and teach workshops with.  This class is no exception! You'll be using all sorts of wonderful natural foraged things, such as fallen leaves, winter berries, and plants sourced by Katharina.

To give you a taste of what to expect, Katharina ran a bit of a demo of her workshop last week, with some beautiful results, and took some pictures to share with us.  I don't know about you, but I really want to give this a go!

Katharina's printmaking inductees produced some really beautiful prints, and were thrilled to walk away with a set of monoprinted gift-tags, cards and envelopes.

You don't have to be an artist or a printmaker to do this workshop.  You'll have a lot of fun learning new techniques, and Katharina's confident you'll get a lot out of the experience, alongside some lovely paper goods!

The workshop takes place on Tuesday 26 November, at The Print Shop in Quakers Friars from 6-9pm.

Workshop: Papercutting with Sarah Dennis

Sarah Dennis returns to The Print Shop this Thursday with her popular papercutting workshop.

In the workshop, you will learn the fundamental techniques and tricks for creating artwork with only a craft knife and paper, whilst experiencing the calming process of paper cutting and the dramatic aesthetic effect that the medium offers.

To give you a taste of what the class will be like, Sarah has taken some wonderful photographs of her October workshop, which we thought we'd share with you.

Sarah is offering an introductory workshop to papercutting on Thursday 14 November, and a class for slightly more experienced papercutters on Wednesday 20 November.  For more information, click here.

The Print Shop has a range of workshops on offer this autumn to keep you inspired and creative as the cold weather and long nights draw in.  Refresh your printmaking and craft skills, or learn something new.  We explain some of the print terminology to give you an idea of what's currently on offer.

Etching is an intaglio technique, in which a drawing is created on a sheet of metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) coated with a thin acid resistant layer, with a sharp tool.  The plate is then immersed in a bath of acid which 'bites' or etches away the metal in the areas exposed by the drawing.

Once the design has been etched to a sufficient depth, the acid resistant layer is cleaned off, and ink is rubbed into the lines of the design, before being wiped clean.  A sheet of dampened paper is placed over the plate, which is then fed through a printing press to apply pressure.  This causes the ink to be pulled out of the incised lines and onto the paper, creating the platemark.

Monoprinting can take many forms, but in basic terms, is a single impression of an image which can only be printed once. It can be made in a number of ways, such as using a metal etching plate, a litho stone, a wooden block, or using paint or collage. 

Sophie Rae, one of our featured printmakers, creates mono prints by sketching, hand cutting paper stencils, and using a roller to mix her vibrant oil-based inks, before applying the inked stencils to her images, and creating lots of depth and layers with graduating tones.

Paper cutting is the art of cutting paper designs (using scalpels and other cutting tools), but can be broadly applied to a number of different applications and styles.  It has evolved uniquely all over the world to adapt to different cultures.

Sarah Dennis, who has joined Volume 3 of The Print Shop to teach others the way of her craft, creates designs inspired by Chinese paper cutting, nature and her childhood.  Her work combines traditional collage with contemporary techniques to create a bold unique and stylised imagery that's bursting with charm.

Discover the world of paper cutting with Sarah Dennis, a Bristol-based freelance artist whose work combines traditional scherenschnitte (paper cutting) with collage. 

In the workshop you will learn the fundamental techniques and tricks for creating artwork with only a craft knife and paper. You will also get to appreciate the calming process of paper cutting and the dramatic aesthetic effect that the medium offers. You will be introduced to the tools and methods used by paper cut artists through the ages and you will learn how to make your own paper cut artwork using the rules of negative and positive space. 

If you would like to take your skills a step further or you have prior experience with paper cutting, the advanced class will teach you how to develop your own design further by adding layers, depth and colours to create your own bespoke paper artwork.

Using Japanese cutting tools you will create single colour prints from a Lino plate.

By the end of the 2 sessions you will be able to continue printing from home without the

need of expensive equipment.
